Principles of Design Balance, Unity and Harmony This week in class, we discussed design elements with a special emphasis on balance, unity, and harmony. These elements affect the way a space makes a person feel, the environment it creates, and the power the elements hold.  Balance creates a sense of equilibrium in a space by distributing visual weight effectively. This can be done through symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial balance. Symmetrical balance is achieved by mirroring objects on either side along the same line or axis. This can make a space feel formal but sometimes static. Asymmetrical balance can be somewhat more dynamic since it distributes visual weight without duplication, creating a more engaging composition. Radial balance allows elements to surround a central point, usually seen in circular layouts.
